The Unexpected — curated by global creative house JustKids — brings urban and contemporary art to Arkansas, culminating in an annual week-long event in downtown Fort Smith. A key element of The Unexpected, the event brings a team of international artist who add original works to a growing collection of phenomenal and unexpected public art.

This year, The Unexpected 2018 will introduce the Outlier Series, which adds new programming featuring augmented activities expanding on art, music and thought to create an enhanced cultural experience in downtown Fort Smith. The Unexpected 2018 takes place October 22-28, 2018. The Outlier Series will close out the weekend and will offer an impressive lineup of local, regional and Grammy-nominated headliners on October 26th (Friday) and 27th (Saturday).

OCTOBER 22-28 (ALL WEEK)

The Unexpected 2018 Artists: Throughout the week, visitors are encouraged to tour existing artwork and visit the new 2018 sites to see this year’s team of renowned international artists created beautiful new works of urban contemporary art.

OCTOBER 25 (Thursday)
8 PM | A Modern Procedure for Breathing: A Modern Procedure for Breathing is a new music composition by Amos Cochran for strings, piano, and electronics, paired with a visual element of light and projections that will spill into the streets of downtown Fort Smith.The piece explores the fall and then re-emergence one goes through after a traumatic event, and brings the spectator on a journey exploring a sonic landscape oscillating between bliss and dissonance. A Modern Procedure for Breathing is sure to be an experience unlike any other found in Arkansas. Thursday, October 25 8pm. Ground Floor Propak.

10 AM-12 PM & 1-4 PM | Creative Center’s Wheel Mobile: a custom-designed Winnebago equipped with 9 potter’s wheels, art supplies and clean-up facilities developed to offer potter’s wheel classes and art workshops for adults and students of all ages. Join us for free pottery demonstrations and activities!

10 AM-5 PM | ArtFeeds Van Gogh 2.0 Art Bus: a beautifully transformed school bus with seating for up to 20 students. Bring your kiddos downtown to participate in a free art activity!

1 PM | Futurist Speaker, Thomas Frey: Frey, Google’s #1 rated futurist, is an American futurist and celebrity speaker who has built an enormous following based on his ability to develop accurate visions of the future and describe the opportunities ahead. Frey is based at the Westminster, Colorado DaVinci Institute, which he founded, and serves as its executive director and senior futurist. Prior to this, he was an engineer with IBM for fifteen years. Having started seventeen businesses himself and assisting on the development of hundreds more, the understanding he brings to his audiences is a rare blend of reality-based thinking coupled with a clear-headed visualization of the world ahead. Join us for a compelling 60-minute keynote followed by 15 minutes of Q & A. Takes place at the ground floor of Propak; 1100 Garrison Avenue, Fort Smith, AR. 72901.
